Maiden Middle 8th Graders Step Into the “Reality of Money”

SECU simulation brings financial literacy to life with help from district and community volunteers

Eighth graders at Maiden Middle School recently got a hands-on lesson in financial literacy through The Reality of Money, an engaging simulation presented by the State Employees’ Credit Union (SECU). The event gave students a real-world look at what it takes to manage a budget, pay bills, and make financial decisions as adults.
Inside the school gym—transformed into a mini financial fair—students rotated through a variety of “life stations,” including groceries, housing, transportation, childcare, and entertainment. Each participant was given a scenario with a job, salary, and family situation, then tasked with making responsible choices that fit within their assigned budget.
As they moved through the activity, students quickly learned how education levels, credit history, and spending habits can affect their lifestyle and financial stability. Designed for students in grades 8–12, SECU’s Reality of Money teaches the lasting importance of wise money management and planning for the future.
“It was so much fun!” said Shannon Fuller, EC Instructional Coach for Catawba County Schools, who volunteered during the event. “The students were really engaged, and it was exciting to watch them connect classroom learning to real-life decisions.”
The event’s success was made possible by SECU representatives and a team of district and community volunteers, who guided students through each scenario and offered practical advice along the way.
By the end of the day, Maiden Middle’s eighth graders walked away with a deeper understanding of how their choices today can shape their financial futures tomorrow—proving that learning about money can be both meaningful and fun.
