At Compass Academy, Family Connections Are the Secret Ingredient

Hands-on learning brings students and families together through a sweet apple-themed project

When Compass Academy Principal Tashanna Mays challenged her students to explore the world of apples, she hoped to spark curiosity and connection. What followed was a heart-warming project that blended classroom learning with family fun—and filled kitchens across Catawba County with the aroma of freshly baked apple crisp.
Students began their apple adventure with a visit to Perry Lowe Apple Orchard, where they learned how apples are grown, harvested, and brought to our tables. Back at school, they took part in a variety of apple-themed lessons—tasting different varieties, measuring ingredients in math, and writing reflections about their favorite fall flavors.
The learning didn’t stop there. Each student took home a bag of ingredients and a recipe to make apple crisp as a family. Parents were invited to snap a photo of their finished dessert and send it back to school for a family engagement prize drawing.
“We wanted to create an opportunity for families and the school to connect on their terms and at their convenience,” said Principal Tashanna Mays. “It’s not always easy for parents to attend school events, so this was a way to bring the experience home. The photos we received showed smiles, teamwork, and togetherness—that’s what education is all about.”
More than a dozen families joined in, sending photos of children measuring, mixing, and sampling their creations. Many shared how much they enjoyed learning—and laughing—together.
“It made us slow down and enjoy time as a family,” one parent wrote. “And the apple crisp turned out amazing!”
For Mays and her team, the project was more than a fun fall activity—it was a meaningful reminder of the power of family involvement.
“When families are engaged, students thrive,” Mays said. “We’re so grateful to our Compass Academy families for embracing this project with such enthusiasm. We can’t wait for our next opportunity to learn and grow together.”
At Compass Academy, learning doesn’t stop when the bell rings. It extends into homes, hearts, and communities—proving once again that connection is the sweetest ingredient of all.
