Startown Elementary Honors Veterans with Heartfelt Celebration
Students, staff, and families gather to thank those who served
The Media Center at Startown Elementary was standing-room only on Wednesday, November 12, as students, staff, and families came together for the school’s annual Veterans Day Celebration—a heartfelt event organized by the third-grade team to honor those who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces.Veteran family members were invited to enjoy a breakfast reception, followed by a short program featuring student performances, patriotic music, and words of appreciation. The morning began with the Air Force JROTC Color Guard from Maiden High School presenting the colors and leading the audience in the Pledge of Allegiance, setting a tone of pride and respect that carried through the entire event.
Principal Jennifer Stodden, whose husband is a military veteran, welcomed guests and thanked them for their service and sacrifice. She spoke about the importance of recognizing the courage and commitment of those who protect our freedoms and reminded students that honoring veterans is part of what makes Startown a Purple Star-designated school—a recognition for schools that go above and beyond to support military-connected students and families.
“We’re so grateful for the veterans in our community and for the families who serve alongside them,” Stodden said. “Today is about celebrating their sacrifice and teaching our students the value of gratitude and service.”As veterans and their families enjoyed breakfast, students shared songs and reflections that filled the room with smiles and emotion. The sense of pride and community was unmistakable—a true reflection of Startown’s #DiamondStandard spirit.
This celebration was one of many Veterans Day events held across Catawba County Schools last week and this week, as schools districtwide took time to honor those who have served our nation. From parades to assemblies, musical performances to classroom tributes, CCS students continue to learn that freedom comes from the dedication of those who serve.
